Talat Xhaferi of the Democratic Union for Integration (BDI), the largest ethnic Albanian party in North Macedonia, was elected speaker of parliament for a second term.
Xhaferi received 62 votes on Friday, one more than the minimum required. The coalition led by the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDMS), BDI and PDSH voted for.
Largest opposition party VMRO-DPMNE voted against, while Albanian opposition party Alliance for Albanians left the hall before the voting took place.
SDSM and BDI reached a governing coalition deal this week. Zoran Zaev is expected to become the country’s prime minister for a full 4-year-term. A BDI candidate will be elected prime minister of the interim government that prepares general elections 100 days ahead of the date.
