The Albanian opposition has decided to launch nationwide protests “immediately” against the Rama government following last night’s demolition of the country’s National Theatre.
The decision came after a meeting of opposition party leaders today.
“Our decision is to support all civil society protests, starting with support for the Alliance [for the Protection of National Theatre]’s protests for the theater, and launching opposition protests immediately,” opposition leader Lulzim Basha told journalists from his Democratic Party headquarters.
Basha stated that the opposition will rebuild the National Theatre when it comes to power, and push for those responsible for the demolition to be held legally accountable, including Prime Minister Edi Rama.
The opposition leader has assured the public that he won’t repeat his previous mistake of striking an agreement with Rama at the benefit of the people, like in 2017.
“Three years ago, I sat down with this man with the hope and confidence that we could reach an agreement for the good of the people and to guarantee the electoral process. Time has shown that I was wrong. This mistake will not be repeated.”
