Albanian Police Cracks Down on Unauthorized Cryptocurrency Labs

Albanian police have dismantled and seized two unauthorized cryptocurrency labs in Shijak, near Durrës.

During an operation on Friday, the police seized some 631 units used to generate cryptocurrency. These include computers, solar panels, and other means of securing a continuous supply of electricity illegally.

They also arrested three people while another four are on the run. The seven men are charged with fraud, operating a business without the appropriate license, and hiding income.

The police estimate around €1 million was spent to set up both labs.

Albania has authorized the mining of cryptocurrency in its territory, but companies and individuals who want to invest in cryptocurrency must obtain the appropriate licenses.

Meanwhile, the government of Kosovo has decided to ban cryptocurrency mining as the country faces some of the worst power shortages in its history this winter.
