Over the weekend, traffic police in Albania suspended the driving licenses of 234 people, arrested 53 more, and imposed a staggering 5391 administrative measures such as fines.
According to an announcement on the State Police website, police used radar and drones as well as conventional methods to catch those violating the rules. In some cases, road users were found exceeding the speed limit by between 50-80 km/h.
Through the use of radar, 169 licenses were suspended for breaking the speed limit. A further 65 were suspended for drink driving, and 28 more received administrative penalties for not having a license.
1362 measures were imposed for incorrect overtaking, and 54 for non-compliance with signs and dangerous manoeuvres on the road. 526 were for not wearing a seatbelt and over 1000 for using a mobile phone while driving.
23 of those that received fines were foreign citizens who are required to pay a fine of 30,000 lek.
Albania is ranked globally as one of the countries with the highest level of accidents in Europe with 13.7 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.
