Albanian President Admits “Shortcomings” in the Constitutional Court Appointment Process

President Ilir Meta has acknowledged the legal shortcomings of the appointment process for the Constitutional Court.

In an interview given yesterday, he said:

There is no withdrawal from the president regarding the constitutionality of the process. This process has had and still has its shortcomings from the point of view of the law and many other aspects.”

As Exit has previously explained, the last members of the six new appointees were appointed without adherence to the law or the Constitution.  It’s required that three candidates are submitted for each round of appointees. In this case, only two, and then one was submitted, bringing the whole process into question.

Meta added:

“The Constitutional Court has been and should be the most important institution in the country, as it is in any country where the rule of law rules. The President has made every effort to ensure that Albania is not left without a functioning Constitutional Court for a second, but there is still work to be done to have a fully functioning court and for the President, the functioning of the Constitutional Court is a crucial issue. This is an ongoing process, we must all follow and monitor the functioning of this court and its decision-making. “
