Albanian President Returns Electoral Code Changes to Parliament

President Ilir Meta has refused to decree and has returned to the assembly the unilateral amendments to the Electoral Code, approved on October 5.

Since they were approved in Parliament at the beginning of the month, he stated several times that he would not approve them.

According to the decree, the reason why the president has returned the amendments to the Electoral Code is that they violate the principle of due process of law, as well as the right to vote and to be elected, and above all the principle of equality of the vote.

Meta also writes that on October 21 he addressed the Venice Commission for a specialized opinion on this process and invites the socialist majority to consider their response.
