Albanian Prime Minister: Borders to Remain Closed, Bars and Cafes Last to Reopen

Prime Minister Edi Rama said the Albanian borders will not open any time soon, due to the ongoing risk of infection from COVID-19.

In a live link with News24 last night, Rama said that customs and the borders will remain closed for now. He emphasized that the more citizens adhere to restrictions in place, the better it will be for everyone.

When asked whether women on maternity leave would receive assistance from the government as a part of the economic package, he confirmed that they would. He added that those working in hotels and restaurants that remain closed will also receive financial assistance from the state.

“Those who have worked in hotels and restaurants and have been closed, have entered the category that will be paid by us. The first package, small business, if you are registered, you will be paid,” Rama said.

He confirmed that bars, cafes and restaurants will be the last businesses to be opened at the end of the pandemic.

On the topic of respirators, Rama said there are 304 available and only 1.3% are in use at the moment.

In a Facebook post, Rama said that the government will propose changes to the criminal code and road code to the Assembly. These changes will apply under the conditions of an epidemic during a state of natural disaster.

“[…] On the one hand, they will protect the people from the disobedient until the end of this war, on the other hand, they will guarantee necessary relief in the future, ensuring the health of every citizen.”

Rama clarified that punishments for violations would include revocation of driving license and even imprisonment.
