Albanian Prime Minister Defends Forcing Repatriated Citizens to Pay for Mandatory Hotel Quarantine

Prime Minister Edi Rama defended his decision to repatriate Albanians stranded abroad and to make them pay for a mandatory 14 days quarantine in a hotel.

He used Singapore as an example and said that the cost citizens would be made to pay “would be reasonable”.

In a Facebook post, Rama’s preferred method of communication, he justified it by noting that in Singapore when returning citizens quarantined at home, they infected family members. 

“I assure you that the package will be very reasonable for them and the government will do everything possible to ensure that the financial cost of repatriation is optimal within the conditions in which we all live and work. “

From Thursday, Albanians stranded abroad can buy flight and hotel packages on the Air Albania website.

The cost of flights will start at €100 and €21 per night for the 14-day hotel accommodation.

Prime Minister Edi Rama announced that €14 of this will be paid from the government meaning those in quarantine will pay only €7 per day, a total of €98.

The media reported that 18 Albanians that recently returned from Greece and were put into hotels for a two-week quarantine period did not have money to pay for the duration of their stay and had only paid for two days. This led to a clash with the owner and police intervention.
