Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has fired the mayor of Lushnje, Fatos Tushe, after he was arrested on Tuesday on charges of corruption.
The Council of Minister’s decision cites “grave violations” of the law on local governance as the grounds for its decision.
Tushe was arrested yesterday following an operation by the Special Prosecution Office against Corruption (SPAK), along with 15 other people, including several public officials and businessmen.
According to SPAK, Tushe allegedly has violated the principle of fair competition during a public procurement process and has falsified documents for a tender of 24 million lek (roughly € 200,000) for the construction of an irrigation channel around the city of Lushnje.
