Albania’s Leaders Support Kosovo’s President After Indicted On War Crimes

Albania’s President Ilir Meta on Thursday praised the resignation of President Hashim Thaci after the war crimes indictment against him was confirmed by The Hague- based Specialist Chambers.

Meta also praised the fight of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) as “just and heroic”.

“This is a moment of reflection to strengthen more skills and unity, in the best national interests,” Meta wrote on Facebook.

Also the Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama expressed the state’s support to Hashim Thaci, who resigned right after the indictment was confirmed.

“Hashim Thaci has all the support and solidarity of Albania in this next battle for Kosovo and the inviolable justice of the Liberation War,” Rama wrote on Twitter.

He called the trial against Thaci as “an absurd process that will finally seal the purity of the KLA and the inability to rewrite its history”.

The leader of the Democratic Party Lulzim Basha said he is convinced that President Hashim Thaci, the leader of Democratic Party of Kosovo Kadri Veseli, former parliament speaker and all other KLA fighters will prove to the world that the indictments against them are unfounded.

He called it unfair to equate the victim with the aggressor.

“No one can equate the KLA’s just fight for human dignity and freedom with the massacres and genocide perpetrated by [Slobodan] Milosevic’s criminal hordes against the civilian population of Kosovo,” said Basha.

Kosovo’s President Hashim Thaci resigned after an indictment on war crimes by the Specialist Prosecutor’s Office was confirmed by the Specialist Chambers Kosovo on Thursday.

“As I promised I will not allow in any circumstances for the president of Kosovo to be before the court, so to protect the integrity of the state of Kosovo, people of Kosovo […], today I resign from this position,” Thaci told media during a press conference.
