The National Theater troupe and other fellow artists will camp out on the square in front of the National Theater building, starting from today at 19:00, until their demands are met. This decision was announced after their hearing with Tirana mayor Erion Veliaj failed to produce any agreement.
In a press statement, representatives of the Alliance for Protecting the Theater (AMT) declared:
Artists are not fooled by the declarations of the Prime Minister’s subordinates. We take this opportunity to announce that the meeting brought no tangible results and that the parties held diametrically opposed stances. We will continue our fight against mafia alliances between the power and business, until the government finally renounces this draft law and makes way for dialogue concerning the reconstruction of national theaters, doubling the budget for culture, and passing democratic laws about art in general and the theater, specifically.
Yesterday, mayor Veliaj did not give any ground regarding the government’s plans to expropriate public land in order to give it by means of a special law to the private company Fusha shpk.
