Basha Reconsidering Role of Opposition in Parliament

In an interview during TV program Opinion, PD leader Lulzim Basha explained the opposition’s possible avenues after the contentious election of Arta Marku as Prosecutor General last Monday.

During the interview, Basha claimed that Prime Minister Edi Rama has now de facto taken over the prosecution, and has done so in violation of the Constitution. According to Basha, Rama’s aim was to stop the investigation of several politicians close to him, including former Minister of Interior Saimir Tahiri, Durrës mayor Vangjush Dako, and Elbasan mayor Qazim Sejdini.

Our society is in a deep moral crisis for one single reason, because to arrive at this point Edi Rama has to submit the elites, media, civil society, and economic capital.

Basha declared that there were three possible scenarios for the opposition in relation to the current Parliament:

  1. Conditional relations with Parliament. The PD will demand the Parliament to return to legality, and will work inside Parliament to further those aims;
  2. Long-term boycott. The PD will no longer take part in the Parliament;
  3. Invalidation of the opposition’s mandates. Only an option if undertaken by the entire opposition, including the LSI. This would expose the dictatorial nature of the government.

The PD is currently evaluating which of the three strategies it will follow from the beginning of next parliamentary year.
