Boat Smuggling Migrants Caught Near Vlora in Bad Weather

Albanian police intercepted a boat carrying irregular migrants bound for Italy, in the mouth of the Vjosa River.

The vessel, carrying men, women and children were evacuated by the Coast Guard and State Police and transported on to Vlora. This was carried out despite difficult conditions including rain, wind, and rough sea.

Police in Vlora and the Border Police are carrying out investigations to ascertain those responsible and to bring them to justice.

The trafficking of migrants through Albania via car has been reported in increasing numbers throughout 2020 but this is the first time in recent times that a boat has been caught attempting to transport them abroad.
