In an “exclusive” interview with the US right-wing populist news website Breitbart, opposition leader Lulzim Basha stated that
Albania is in a unique and difficult situation, in a political crisis, the results of a full onslaught of organized crime on all state structures, on the rule of law, and democracy.
Basha was in the US to meet with Republican congressional leaders to gather support for his call to Prime Minister Edi Rama to step down and allow the formation of a caretaker government.
He met with, among others, Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX), chairman of the House Rules Committee; Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX), chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee; and Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA), chairman of the House Foreign Relations Committee.
Basha also met with Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, who recently made several controversial statements regarding the political situation in the Balkans, and called for the investigation of Prime Minister Rama’s links to an illegal campaign contribution made to the campaign of former US President Barack Obama.
On March 14, several US senators sent a letter to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, asking for an investigation of links between George Soros and US Embassy in Albania. According to Breitbart, Basha became a “target of Soros organization smears” after coming out as a Trump supporter.
Basha’s visit the US comes at the moment that Albanian media related to the government widely distributed a statement from an anonymous US Embassy “spokesperson” denying that the US government supports the opposition protest.
Exit has reached out the US Embassy to confirm this statement in an official declaration and release the name of the spokesperson.
