COVID-19 Variants Increase Risk of Reinfection
Deputy Minister of Health, Eugena Tomini has stated that people who have previously been infected with COVID-19 must still take precautions as new variants of the virus pose a risk of reinfection.
During an interview on A2, Tomini said that Albania has recorded cases of reinfection and added that “the mutation of the virus makes you exposed again.””They must strictly respect the measures until we achieve the immunity of the herd- something we are far away from”, declared the deputy minister.

She urged citizens to implement anti-COVID measures to minimize the possibility of infection.

Regarding the implementation of measures by politicians during the election campaign, Tomini said that “politics should provide a double model, while each of us provides an individual model.”

A study published this week in Oxford found that people who passed COVID-19 have antibodies that fight the British and South African variant of the coronavirus but not to the same extent that they manage to neutralize the original variant, suggesting a potentially lower level of protection.

Over 1,000 infected cases were registered in Albania last week, setting record figures since the pandemic began.

There are still no confirmed cases of new variants of COVID-19 in Albania while the authorities are awaiting the results from the samples they have sent to the UK.
