Day 5: Oil Workers Join Opposition Protest

On the fifth day of the opposition protest on the boulevard in front of the Prime Ministry, the protesters have been joined by oil workers from Fier, Balls, and Patos. Even though for several months they have been protesting against the non-payment of their salaries, no public institution has so far responded to their concerns.

According to the oil workers, there are more than 800 of them whose families have no other income that the wages from the refinery.

In a meeting with the oil workers, PD leader Lulzim Basha said that the Rama Government has abandoned their work and efforts, even though oil is one of the most profitable natural resources of the country.

The hundreds of millions of dollars that made with the oil don’t end up in the wages of the oil workers, to the education of their children, […] but in the hands of corrupt thieves.

Basha reiterated the conviction of the opposition and its supports to continue the protest until their condition is met: the creation of a technical govenrment for the organization of free and fair elections.

He declared that the deputies of the opposition will not return to Parliament until Prime Minister Rama has reflected on the demands of the protesters. He added that the place of the deputies is side by side with the citizens who demand free elections, and that as long as there are people on the streets, the deputies will not return to Parliament.

During this evening, the tent on the Boulevard of the Martyrs again featured discussion between deputies, journalists, and other public figures who have joined the cause of the citizens.

Also, the hunger strikers from Zharrëz have begun a march to Tirana, although is not yet know whether they will join the oil workers and other protesters in front of the Prime Ministry.
