Decriminalization, PS Goes to Constitution Court over Mayor Kapllanaj

The parliamentary group of the PS has today asked the Constitutional Court to withdraw the mandate of Mayor of Mallakastra Agron Kapllanaj (PD).

The PS has taken this initiative after the Central Election Commission (KQZ) refused to approve the request of the PS’s request a few days ago. In March, the KQZ had also refused to withdraw the mandates of  Mayor of Tepelena Tërmet Peçi and Mayor of Poliçan Adriatik Zotkaj, both from the PS.

The PS deputies claim that Kapllanaj has been sentenced to two years imprisonment and a fine of €200 for theft in Italy, and that based on the decriminalization law he is not allowed to hold elected office. The PS blamed Klement Zguri, who became KQZ chairman after the McAllister+ deal between Prime Minister Edi Rama and opposition leader Lulzim Basha in May, of refusing the PS’s request.

If the Constitutional Court decides to withdraw Kapllanaj’s mandate, early elections will be held in Mallakastra.
