Demolition of Illegal Constructions Along Albanian Coast to Start Next Week

Prime Minister Rama announced that the demolition of illegal buildings along the Albanian coast will begin next Monday, June 7. The announcement was made during Rama’s visit to the coastal village of Shëngjin, a popular tourist destination.

Rama warned all owners that no building will be spared, and they should vacate the premises and not oppose the demolition, otherwise they will face criminal charges.

Owners will also be responsible for the ensuing cleanup.

This is the third time in a month that Rama has threatened owners of illegal constructions built along the Albanian coast.

Two weeks ago Rama announced that the government would begin demolitions along the Velipoja to Ksamil stretch, adding that the operation should be concluded before the summer.

Today’s meeting was also attended by Minister of Interior Bledi Çuçi and the head of the State Cadastral Agency, Artan Lame, who said that both institutions will cooperate to clean the Albanian coast from illegal buildings and coordinate the list of objects to be demolished.

Çuçi stated that the government will first deal with illegally occupied spaces, then in September they will move on to the demolition of illegally built constructions.

Rama urged the police to start systematic inspections to sort out abuses in tourist spaces and protected and cultural heritage areas. He stated that in addition to illegal buildings, anyone who had abused with constructions permits would be punished.
