Dismissed Police Officers Demand Interior Minister Resignation

Police officers who have been dismissed protested today in front of the Ministry of Interior Affairs demanding the resignation of Minister of Interior Affairs Fatmir Xhafaj, as a result of his close ties to crime.

The unjustly dismissed officers, who have formed the Dismissed Police Officers Association, condemned the Ministry’s affiliation with crime and gangs, as, for 5 years, the country’s main institution responsible for law and order, is being lead by politicians involved in crime and under investigation.

Aleks Hajdari, the head of the association, spoke: “The institution [the Ministry of Interior Affairs], since 5 years now, has been lead by two Ministers, Tahiri and Xhafaj – one of them stands accused of international drug trafficking and organized crime, whereas the other’s brother has been convicted of organized crime.”

The police officers also condemned the fact that Albania has become Europe’s “cannabis granary” and a cocaine gateway.

“Referring to international reports concerning the activity of the Ministry of Interior Affairs, we are concerned about the fact that Albania is considered as the main cannabis producer and the main gateway country for trafficking cocaine into the EU” Hajdari added.
