Employees of Shoe Factory in Durres Protest over Lack of Government Financial Assistance

Employees of a shoe factory in Durres are protesting today as they have not received any financial assistance from the Albanian governments so-called “war fund”.

The “war fund” refers to money set aside to pay towards the salaries of those impacted by lockdown measures taken to prevent the COVID-19 crisis.

The company which has 86 employees told them to claim the money from the government but after they contacted the tax authorities, they were informed that the company had closed. As a result, not one of the employees will receive money from the state.

Employees said they had also been indirectly threatened as a result of them protesting.

Some told Ora News that they are suffering great financial hardships during this time and they feel they have been abandoned by the government and the state. Not only are they unable to meet their food requirements but others cannot afford to rent apartments.
