EU Envoy Lajcak: Kosovo-Serbia Dialogue Is Back on Track

EU envoy Miroslav Lajcak has announced the successful conclusion of the virtual meeting to resume the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia.

“I am glad to say that after the Paris summit and today’s meeting the EU-facilitated dialogue on comprehensive normalization of relations between Serbia and Kosovo is back on track after 20 months,” he stated.

Kosovo’s Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti and Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic had a virtual meeting on Sunday, facilitated by Lajcak and EU chief diplomat Josep Borrell, to mark the resumption of the dialogue.

The parties agreed on the “main elements of the process”, and agenda for the next meeting. No further details were given on the content and outcome of discussions.

The next meeting will be held in person in Brussels on July 16.

In his opening remarks, Borrell stated that they aimed to restart a serious and intense work in the normalization of relations, which should result in “a comprehensive, final and legally binding normalization agreement, an agreement that would resolve all outstanding issues.”

The key dispute between Kosovo and Serbia remains Kosovo’s recognition. While by “normalization of relations” Kosovo understands its recognition by Serbia, the latter excludes this.
