The European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell said that the continuation of the EU-facilitated dialogue between Pristina and Belgrade on the normalization of relations is crucial for both countries’ European path.
“I look forward to hosting you for the next high-level meeting of the Dialogue as soon as possible and remain firmly committed to helping the two sides achieve a comprehensive agreement,” Borrell wrote in a letter sent to Kosovo’s Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, signed on April 6.
“The comprehensive normalization of the relations between Kosovo and Serbia, addressing all outstanding issues, is crucial for the respective European path of Kosovo and Serbia and your citizens. This is also key for improving regional cooperation,” Borrell said.
He also confirmed the EU’s commitment to the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This fight will remain a major priority for the foreseeable future. We also want to see Kosovo advance on its European path. Determined reform efforts will be needed to strengthen the rule of law in Kosovo and to promote socio-economic development,” Borrell said.
EU high representatives continuously pointed out the importance of the continuation of the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia.
Albin Kurti was elected as Kosovo’s Prime Minister following a historic victory his party marked on the snap parliamentary elections on February 14, by winning with 50.28%.
During his speech, while presenting his cabinet, Kurti said that the issue of missing persons will be a priority for the government in the dialogue with Serbia.
“We have 1,640 missing persons. Serbia has not condemned anyone for this crime […] No progress can be made in any other area if there is no progress in this one,” Kurti stated.
