High representatives of the European Union congratulated the newly elected Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, pointing out the readiness to support the country on its EU path and the dialogue process with Serbia.
The European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi said that is looking forward to working with Kurti “on taking forward the reforms on the European Union path and continuing fight against COVID-19 pandemic”.
“Dialogue with Belgrade on the normalization of relations remains key,” Varhelyi wrote on Twitter.
The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell said that the EU fully supports the reform agenda and tackling the COVID-19. He states that is looking forward to working with Kurti on bringing the Belgrade-Prishtina dialogue “to a successful close”.
“This is crucial for the European path,” he said.
Also, the EU envoy for the dialogue between Prishtina and Belgrade, Miroslav Lajcak congratulating Kurti, says that talks with Belgrade are the issue Kurti needs to deal with.
“The EU stands ready to facilitate the Dialogue on the normalization of relations with Serbia,” Lajcak said.
Albin Kurti was elected as Kosovo’s Prime Minister on Monday, with 67 out of 120 votes by the Assembly of Kosovo.
He came to office following a historic victory his party marked on the snap parliamentary elections on February 14, by winning with 50.28%.
During his speech, while presenting his cabinet, Kurti said that the issue of missing persons will be a priority for the government in the dialogue with Serbia.
“We have 1,640 missing persons. Serbia has not condemned anyone for this crime […] No progress can be made in any other area if there is no progress in this one,” Kurti stated.
