EU Leaders Confirm Donors’ Conference for Albania

The EU leaders have backed the European Commission’s announcement to provide humanitarian assistance for Albania and to organize a donors’ conference, following the November 26 earthquake that left 51 dead.

On Thursday, the European Council adopted several conclusions after its meeting in Brussels, including the one on Albania.

The donors’ conference is expected to take place in January 2020, organized by France, after the Albanian government has concluded a report on earthquake damages.

Prime Minister Edi Rama welcomed the Council’s decision in a Facebook post, and expressed optimism for the future of people and areas hit by earthquake.

Earlier today, Rama nominated Arben Ahmetaj as Minister for Reconstruction. For five years, Ahmetaj was Minister of Finance until Rama sacked half of the ministers last year amidst students’ protests.
