EU Migration Commissioner: EU Is Monitoring Albanian Illegal Immigration

Today, EU Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos announced that the EU is monitoring cases of illegal immigration and asylum requests coming from Albania.

During his speech in the EU ministerial for the Western Balkans, taking place in Tirana today, Avramopoulos declared:

The danger of illegal immigration must be decreased. With regards to suspension of visas, I can say that we are monitoring the situation, not only for Albania, but all countries.

The mechanism of suspending visas has not yet been implemented, but, if there is a 50% increase in immigration and refusal of return to the home country, then this option also exists.

Avramopoulos’ statement that stresses the importance of reducing illegal immigration and the number of asylum seekers from Albania in the EU, comes only a few months after his previous visit in Albania, when he and Interior Minister Xhafaj signed an agreement aiming to preserve the EU border from illegal immigration and Albanian organized crime.
