EU Ministers to Discuss Opening of EU Negotiations Today

Today, the Foreign Ministers of EU countries will discuss the opening of negotiations for Albania and North Macedonia.

More specifically, it’s expected that they will discuss the dates of the First Intergovernmental Conference for each country. This marks the formal and practical opening of EU negotiations for accession.

Bulgaria has made it clear it will oppose the start of EU talks with North Macedonia due to a dispute over history and language. The news was announced by Bulgarian Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaraieva.

“Bulgaria is saying ‘No’ to the start of negotiations, we are not saying” No “to accept  North Macedonia into the EU,” said Zahariev.

Despite much speculation, it is not yet known if any country will veto Albania. If just one country votes against, the accession talks cannot formally begin.
