The heads of EU and EU Member State missions in Kosovo and Serbia have urged both counties to resume the dialogue for the normalization of relations as soon as possible.
In a joint statement released today, the welcome the appointment of Miroslav Lajčák as EU Special Representative (EUSR) for the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue, and call on both sides to engage with him without delay.
“We call on the two parties to engage with the newly appointed EUSR and to resume the process without delay.”
Miroslav Lajčák was appointed as Special Representative on April 4 by the European Council. He will be responsible for achieving comprehensive normalization of the relations between Serbia and Kosovo, improving neighborly relations and reconciliation in the Western Balkans, and improving the effectiveness of EU action in the region.
Lajčák’s appointment has raised concerns in some experts, as well as Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi, who has previously pointed out that both Borrell and Lajčák come from countries that do not recognize Kosovo (Spain and Slovakia), which, he claimed, made them unreliable mediators.
Local media in Kosovo reported today that Lajčák is planning to start consultations in Kosovo and Serbia this week.
