European Commission: Constitutional Crisis Needs to Be ‘Rapidly Solved’

In a response to questions of Exit concerning the recent flurry of elections and appointments at the Constitutional Court, European Commission spokesperson Maja Kocijančič has called on “all Albanian institutions concerned that this conflict of interpretation is rapidly solved and clarity is made on the composition of the Constitutional Court.”

At the same time, the Commission spokesperson stressed that “Albania needs a functional Constitutional Court in place as soon as possible.”

It is crucial for the Albanian people and for the effectiveness of the rule of law in Albania. And it is also essential for Albania to move forward on its EU integration path.

While President Ilir Meta has yesterday sworn in Marsida Xhaferllari as new member of the Constitutional Court, this appointment is contested by the Justice Appointments Council and Parliament, who recognized Arta Vorpsi instead.
