European Commission Postpones Progress Reports for Western Balkan Countries

The European Commission will publish the progress report on Albania in October 2020 instead of June.

Last week, the publication of the EU enlargement package and progress reports from candidate countries were pushed back to October, RFE/RL reports

The Commission will present negotiating frameworks for Albania and North Macedonia in June, as planned after the two countries were given green light to open EU accession talks last month.

The delay of reports is due to the coronavirus pandemic and lack of human resources to draft the documents, which include an analysis of the membership process and progress for each country.

Last year, the enlargement package was published in May, following the European Parliament elections.

Since 2018, it was planned that progress reports would be published in April, but this is the second year in a row that this deadline has been postponed.

Reports released in October will certainly include the general elections in Serbia, Northern Macedonia and Montenegro.
