European Commissioner Says Kosovo-Serbia Talks Crucial for Their EU Path

The European Commissioner for Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi said that the continuation of the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia is crucial for both countries’ European path.

“Turning Kosovo’s European perspective into a reality for its citizens also requires a swift continuation of the EU-facilitated Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue and the comprehensive normalization of relations with Serbia,” Varhelyi wrote in his congratulating letter sent to the newly elected Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti.

“This is crucial for the respective European path of Kosovo and Serbia and for improving regional cooperation,” he added.

Varhelyi said that the European Commission is also committed to continue advocating for a positive EU decision on visa liberalization for Kosovo citizens.

Pointing out that the people of Kosovo gave Kurti a strong mandate for reforms to strengthen the rule of law and to promote socio-economic development and a shift towards a greener economy, Varhelyi said that EU stands ready to support him in this regard.

The European Commissioner empathies that fighting the coronavirus pandemic and its socio-economic consequences will remain a major priority for the foreseeable future.

“The EU has already provided substantial assistance and will continue to stand by Kosovo through this challenging time,” Varhelyi wrote.
