President of the European Council Charles Michel has stressed the need for Kosovo’s Specialist Chambers to be kept safe from outside interference.
“It is important that the Specialist Chambers and the Specialist Prosecutor’s Office are able to continue to do their work independently, without any outside interference,” Michel stated after meeting with Kosovo’s Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti in Brussels on Thursday.
The statement comes after the Kosovo Specialist Prosecutor’s Office in Hague announced their indictment against President Hashim Thaci and former Speaker of Parliament Kadri Veseli.
The two leaders fused their discussion on the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue facilitated by EU envoy Miroslav Lajcak. Michel stressed the “urgent need” for dialogue resumption in July 2020.
President Michel reaffirmed the EU’s unequivocal support for the European perspective of the Balkans. He underlined the need for reforms in Kosovo, particularly with regards to rule of law.
They also discussed the Covid-19 pandemic, and the EU assistance to Kosovo, which includes €100 million macro-financial assistance in the form of loans and 68 million in assistance for health needs and social and economic response.
