A joint Kosovo-Serbia team has found human remains in a Serbian town bordering Kosovo, the Kosovo team announced on Monday.
The Director of Kosovo’s Institute of Forensics, Arsim Gerxhaliu went to the location between the southwestern towns of Kizevak and Raska, where body remains believed to be of Kosovo Albanians killed during the late 90s war were found.
“Today the medical team informed me that they found human remains, and we immediately left to Kizevak. Tomorrow at 9 am we will have a meeting with Serbian officials to continue with the excavations,” Gerxhaliu told Kosovo public broadcaster RTK.
Contacted by Exit News, he added that excavation in this location started in 2015.
“We have been working there for 5 years, [Kosovo and Serbia teams] together. The work has intensified in the last three weeks,” he told Exit News.
Gerxhaliu explained that according to Serbian legislation, the prosecutor should now be notified and excavations should continue. The decision for further steps will be taken tomorrow with the Serbian delegation.
Over 1600 people are still listed as missing since the end of the war in Kosovo in 1999.
