Excavations have resumed on Wednesday in the mass graves in Serbia’s southwestern town of Kizevak following a winter break due to weather conditions.
“We will be on the way to the location today. Two of the victims have been identified so far, both from the Rezalla massacre,” Arsim Gerxhaliu, the director of Kosovo’s Forensic Agency told Exit News on Wednesday.
Excavations in Serbia’s Kizevak started in 2015 by joint Serbia-Kosovo teams. They were intensified after mortal remains were confirmed in November, as well as 5 mass graves in December.
The identification of the exact location of the mass graves was possible through aerial images from 1999.
In April 1999, 98 Albanian civilians were executed in the village of Rezalla. The village has 44 missing persons. Two of these victims were found in the village right after the war, while 29 others were found in a mass grave in Serbia’s Rudnica, near Kizevak.
There are 10 other victims listed as still missing from this massacre.
Prime Minister Albin Kurti of Kosovo has prioritized the issue of the missing persons in the dialogue with Serbia on the normalization of relations.
Over 1600 people are still listed as missing since the end of the war in Kosovo in 1999.
