Forest Fire Rages in Lezhe-Mirdita, Threatening Nearby Villages

For almost two weeks, a forest fire has been raging in the forests of Zejmen, Lezhe.

The fire has continued to spread to the Municipality of Mirdita, aided by the wind. Reports say that the flames are fast approaching the villages of Bulger, Katund i Vjeter, and Rubik, putting the homes and lives of residents at risk.

The leader of the Democratic Party in Mirdita Mark Ruc has called the situation alarming and said that it requires swift intervention by the Civil Emergency forces of Lezhe and Mirdita, as well as intervention by air.

“It seems that the central and local government are focused on electoral problems rather than the emergencies that the community has. It also seems that governing influence is without impact, however minimal in these areas.”

He said that the area that is trying to focus on development for tourism is receiving fatal blows by the incineration of the forest. Katund i Vjeter is a part of a programme of 100 villages for mountain tourism and its habitat should be preserved, he said.

Local authorities previously said that intervention from the ground was impossible and that there was no risk to the houses, properties, or inhabitants of the area.
