Formal Opposition Party Leader Lulzim Basha Resigns

Lulzim Basha, the formal leader of the opposition Democratic Party resigned on Monday.

He announced his decision during a meeting with the party leadership.

“Today I don’t want to talk about what has happened and how events have developed, who was right and who was wrong – I am sure time will tell all this,” he said.

Basha entered a conflict with former PD leader Sali Berisha in September, after excluding him first from the parliamentary group and then from the party, following Berisha’s designation by the US State Department over corruption allegations.

Berisha retaliated by calling a meeting of the highest party body, the National Assembly, who voted to fire Basha, while most of the PD leadership sided with Berisha.

Basha refused to recognize the decision of the National Assembly, but finally gave in to pressure by party members and resigned after a catastrophic result in this month’s by-elections, the worst in the party’s history.
