Former Kosovo Minister of Health Convicted of Sexual Assault

A Kosovo court convicted the Former Minister of Health, Numan Balic to two years in prison for sexual assault.

The Court of First Instance of Peja also decided that Balic not be allowed to exercise his profession as a doctor during this period.

According to the indictment dated August 12, 2020, at around 10 p.m., during Balic’s shift at Peja’s main hospital, he asked the victim to enter his office for a consultation. Once she was inside, he locked the door and forced himself on her.

The victim’s son was hospitalized in the orthopedic clinic of the facility in question. And while Balic’s post was elsewhere, he came to the clinic ostensibly to pay a visit to the child.

The victim told the prosecution that after going to his office, Balic pushed her against the wall and forcibly kissing her while asking “Do you need anything?”

The victim managed to unlock the door and run out, and called for help through the window. She later reported the case to the police.

Balic was arrested in October 2020 based on these allegations.

Balic had also been previously accused of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old intern at the same hospital.
