On Monday, a Macedonian court issued an arrest warrant for the former Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, after he failed to report to the police following a conviction for corruption. In a Facebook post from Tuesday, Gruevski claims Gruevski to have fled to Hungary and has requested political asylum.
In the last few days I have received countless threats to my life.
I am in Budapest now, and I have sought political asylum from the Hungarian authorities.
I will always remain true to the cause of Macedonia. I will never give up.
An international arrest warrant is expected to be released today.
Gruevski was sentenced to a two-year jail term for abuse of power on October 5. He had used a €600,000 official state car for personal trips. There are several other corruption cases still pending.
Meanwhile, several of his former cabinet members have been arrested on corruption charges, including former Minister of Transport Mile Janakieski and former General Secretary Kiril Božinovski
