During the last 24 hours, four men have been arrested for domestic violence and sexual assault in Albania.
Police in Vlora arrested a 31-year-old for assaulting his wife, a 27-year-old for assaulting his mother, and a 60-year-old for sexually and physically abusing his daughter.
The official police report states that in the case of the individual who allegedly abused his mother, he did so for “weak motives”. It is not known what Vlora police would constitute suitable motives for exercising violence against a woman.
Meanwhile, in Berat, a 25-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly exercised physical and psychological violence against his mother, a 57-year-old woman.
Albania is ranked as one of the worst countries in Europe for its record of domestic violence. Over half of Albanian women will suffer domestic violence at least once in their lives. Prosecution and conviction rates remain low and despite court orders, women often continue to be abused or murdered. Over 110 Albanian women and girls have been murdered since 2010.
