France Backs Start of EU Negotiations for North Macedonia

France gave clear and unequivocal messages of support for North Macedonia’s readiness to start EU membership negotiations, said North Macedonia Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani.

Osmani made the announcement falling a call with his French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian who also highlighted France’s role in the process.

Osmani and Le Drian discussed the potential for progress of North Macedonia’s EU integration process as France currently holds the six-month EU Council presidency.

The two also discussed political dialogue with Bulgaria and the situation in Ukraine and how these are reflected in Western Balkan countries and on the stability and security of the region and Europe as a whole.

Osmani informed Le Drian that North Macedonia has achieved 100% compliance with the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy, adding that offering the prospect of EU integration to the country and the region is an essential contribution to sustainable regional and European stability.

This comes after EU High Representative Josep Borrell said EU accession for North Macedonia should start as soon as possible without mentioning a date.
