The European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) has launched an investigation into Frontex regarding alleged sexual harassment, maltreatment and illegal deportation of immigrants.
OLAF investigators have been questioning Frontex officers since last month. They are currently reviewing accusations of harassment and maltreatment by a number of officials, including high level ones. The investigation also includes accusations of illegal operations intended to keep immigrants from reaching EU shores.
In October 2020, several media outlets, including Der Spiegel, reported the alleged involvement of Frontex in push back operations along the Greek-Turkish maritime border. These operations violate international laws, and OLAF is investigating whether or not internal Frontex procedures have been violated.
The allegations led European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson to call an extraordinary meeting with Frontex’s Managing Board and the EU ombudsman to launch an investigation into the matter.
