German Ambassador Calls for Swift Establishment of Albanian Constitutional Court

German Ambassador to Tirana Peter Zingraf stressed on Wednesday the importance of establishing the Constitutional Court as soon as possible, especially for the country’s European integration.

After a conversation with Vitore Tushë, the current President of the Constitutional Court and the Judicial Appointments Council (KED), Zingraf wrote on Facebook:

“A functioning Constitutional Court is of central importance for democracy and the trust of Albanians in their institutions.

I hope that with the filling of other places, the functionality of the Constitutional Court will be restored as soon as possible.

This is an important criterion for the question of when the intergovernmental conference on EU accession negotiations will take place.”

For more than two years, the Constitutional Court has been dysfunctional. Currently, the court has only four out of nine members and can not take any case under consideration or decision. There is a backlog of cases totally tens of thousands, many of which are against the government.
