Greece Says They’ll Expand Maritime Borders First, Then Go to the Hague

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated on Sunday that Greece will expand its territorial waters in the Ionian Sea, towards Albania, and after this, the case will go to the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

Speaking publicly on the subject, Mitsotakis stated:

“The right to extend territorial waters to 12 miles is an inalienable unilateral right of the country. It is not discussed, it is not conditioned. “

He said that Greece has an agreement in principle with Albania to send the issue to The Hague as Greece has expanded its territorial waters.

One week ago, Prime Minister Edi Rama, in a conference with Greek Foreign Minister Dendias, stated that the two countries have agreed that the issue will be considered by an international court under international maritime law, without giving explanations on how or when this will happen.

The decision of the two countries was welcomed by the European Union.
