The Greek Parliament is expected to pass the extension of Greece’s territorial waters in the first session for 2021, on January 11.
The extension from 6 to 12 nautical miles of Greece’s territorial waters in the Ionian Sea was approved in December by the Greek State Council.
Local media stress that this should serve as a signal for Turkey, with whom Greece has found it difficult to solve maritime delimitation disputes.
The Albanian government of Edi Rama has strongly supported Greece’s right to double its territorial waters before the two countries take their maritime delimitation issue to the International Court of Justice.
Prime Minister Edi Rama has so far not answered concerns and specific questions by civil society and opposition regarding effects on Albania stemming from its support of Greece’s expansion.
