Independent Candidates Collect Signatures to Run in Albanian Elections

Three independent candidates have started to collect the necessary signatures enabling them to run in the April 25 general elections in Albania.

On Friday, two candidates from the Albanian branch of Kosovo’s Vetevendosje party announced they started the collection of signatures.

Bojken Abazi, the head of the Vetevendosje’s center in Albania, and Iliaz Shehu, an activist and lecturer, plan to run in Tirana and Lezha respectively. The Kosovo political party has not been registered as such in Albania but only as an nonprofit organization.

A third independent candidate who has started collecting signatures is Elton Debreshi, the head of the Bulqiza Miners’ Union, who is expected to run in Diber. He is running on the promise to get the Miner Status, a law protecting miners, approved in parliament.

The Electoral Code requires independent candidates to submit signatures of at least one percent of the voters number in a given constituency.
