Inhabitants of the “Bregu i Lumit” area in Tirana protested today against government’s attempt to demolish 38 houses to open the way for the extension of the so-called New Boulevard.
Bulldozers and police arrived in the area this morning to start the demolition but they were stopped by inhabitants.
The government has refused to give compensation to owners and cancelled their legalization process although they had applied years ago and paid all the necessary fees.
Inhabitants of the Astir area, who also have been protesting for about five months against a similar government decision, joined today’s protest. Opposition’s Democratic Party representatives also supported the protest.
Protesters said that police exercised violence against them. They demanded compensation for their houses and called out the government corruption in the Outer Ring Road project.
