A Kosovo court has upheld the prison sentence of Serbian ex-fighter Zoran Djokic for his involvement in attacks on ethnic Albanian civilians in Peja in 1999.
Djokic was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the attacks, a sentence that was upheld on appeal on Monday (15 November). He was found guilty of war crimes in February of this year after the court found he was a part of an organized group that forcibly entered the homes of Kosovo Albanians, physically and mentally abused them, stole from them, and made them leave their homes. Some were even murdered.
“The verdict contains sufficient and convincing reasons for establishing the facts clearly,” the appeals court said in their verdict.
The first instance court had noted that the operation by Serbian forces, wearing police and paramilitary uniforms, started at the end of March 1999. The aim was to evict them from their homes and kill them.
