Kosovo started treating coronavirus infected patients with blood plasma on Friday.
“The Infectious Diseases Clinic has already given convalescent plasma to the first patient. Doctors say the patients had no side effects and the plasma was well tolerated,” the outgoing Minister of Health, Armend Zemaj said.
He added that two other patients underwent treatment later in the afternoon.
Health authorities have adopted a guideline allowing treatment with covalent plasma as supportive therapy for patients infected with coronavirus.
Treatment of patients with COVID-19 with convalescent plasma is done by taking blood plasma from patients cured of coronavirus, as their blood has antibodies that fight the virus. Antibody transfusion is believed to create what is known as “passive immunity” in those affected by COVID-19.
Kosovo reported 318 new cases infected with coronavirus- 61,688 since the beginning of the pandemic.
There are currently 6,714 active cases in the country.
