On Sunday, Kosovo’s government asked the Albanian diaspora for help, as the country’s healthcare system does not have sufficient resources to withstand the pandemic.
Via a Facebook video, Kosovo’s outgoing Prime Minister Albin Kurti called on Kosovo Albanians that reside in other countries to donate.
In his appeal, Kurti spoke of other difficult situations Kosovo has faced, especially during and in the immediate aftermath of the 1999 war and diaspora’s crucial role.
He said that remittances from the diaspora had always aided the country, but argued that financial trouble and the lack of funds to withstand the COVID-19 emergency have placed Kosovo’s immediate future in jeopardy.
Since March 13, up to Sunday, April 12, 218 coronavirus infected cases have been reported in Kosovo, 7 of which have died.
