In recent days there have been several rumors about a possible deal between Kosovar President Hashim Thaçi and Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vuçić regarding a possible exchange of territories or “border correction” that would create the conditions for the official recognition of Kosovo by Serbia.
During an interview with KosovaPress, Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi stated that the correction of the border will not mean division or exchange of territories.
I did not invent the notion of border correction. Many countries have used this as a way to overcome adversity, to resolve problems, to establish long-term peace. These days i have often repeated: correction of the border does not mean division, does not mean exchange of territories. Put another way, the border correction will not bring about the division of Kosova. This must be clear to everyone.
Thaçi claimed that Kosovo’s demands constitute the return of Presheva, Bujanovc, and Medvegja, “seeing as Serbia has not been able to guarantee [the Albanians living in these territories] those same rights that Kosova guarantees to Serbians living in Kosova.”
Thaçi called all political parties, as well as civil society, to work together towards a common aim of entering Kosova into the EU, NATO, and the UN.
Regarding the accusations leveled against former Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha that he would divide Serbia, Thaçi declared:
I respect his opinion, but I think that it is not enough for the human rights of Albanians over there, seeing as Serbia has consistently failed to enforce this. I am sorry that several medias have become masters of twisting the truth. I have no personal issues with any leaders, be they Albanian or Kosovar.
