The leaders of Kosovo and Serbia have confirmed their participation in the White House meeting on September 2. It will be focused on “negotiations” between the two countries, and hosted by President Trump envoy Richard Grenell and national security advisor Robert O’Brian.
Kosovo Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti, who is currently infected with Covid-19, stressed that Kosovo and Serbia are going to meet “as two independent countries”.
“The US has always been crucial in Kosovo’s state-building process. On September 2, we’ll meet at the White House to discuss with the Serbian side, as two independent countries, major economic cooperation projects that will change the economic perspective of Kosovo and the region,” he wrote on Facebook.
On the contrary, Serbia President Aleksandar Vucic stressed Serbia’s alleged weakness in talks hosted by the U.S., and also in the EU-facilitated dialogue.
“Serbia is not in a position – and it would not be good if it was in a position – to reject the talks,” B92 reported Vucic saying.
“The other day, [Kosovo] said that they support the negotiations under the auspices of the EU. But, I should not enter into their relations. We are too small to be able to afford that,” Vucic added.
He said it’s Grenell who should be asked why he used the word “negotiations” in the announcement, while they will be discussing topics on economy.
